# Volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA)

Some dimensions for analysing a situation, or the impact of change:
- V = **Volatility**: speed / gnarliness of change / propensity to change
- U = **Uncertainty**: surprise, inability to predict, awareness/understanding
- C = **Complexity**: complexity and interaction of environment, forces and situation; chaos! with no cause and effect
- A = **Ambiguity**: clarity, legibility, mixed meanings, cause-and-effect confusion
Origin: US Army late 1980s, mainstream in 2000's.
