# FIPS 140-2
**Security Requirements for Cryptographic Modules**
A Federal Information Processing Standard dating from 2001, approving cryptographic modules (i.e. things that store and use encryption keys).
There are 4 levels of security, with the higher levels requiring various physical tamper-protection and isolation.
Since 2019 there is a successor, [[FIPS 140-3]] but as of 2021 nothing has been certified valid against that yet.
